The Project
Application: Public Access (Non domestic)
Location: Archbishop Holgate’s School, York
System: Modular Ramp

Requirements
The requirement for this project, was the supply and installation of a large platform and accompanying ramp and steps. This was to be installed to a set of modular units within the school grounds that has been used recently by students for revisions and written examinations. It would be replacing an existing timber ramp that would need to be dismantled and removed from site. The ramp we are installing is a like for like replacement, however this would be fully safe and compliant.
During the survey it was determined that given the nature of the site and number of students using the ramp, it would be better to use our Easitread Rubber Crumb surface. We also decided that it would be fitting to have the handrails the same colour as the schools colour scheme, this tied in better with the burgundy building and also maintained compliance on the ramp by providing a contrasting handrail and ramp surface.
Our Easitread Rubber Crumb surface was the perfect solution for this project, with its low slip potential, self-draining surface and excellent impact absorption properties. It would be ideal for a high footfall environment within an educational setting, Easiaccess will often recommend this product when asked to provide ramped access to schools.
We were asked to install this outside of term time so we would be installing at the quietest possible time of the year, and to limit any health and safety concerns if children would be present on site. This was not a problem for us as we always aim to make our installs convenient for all parties involved.
Features
The ramp needed to be suitable and fit for purpose, following on from our site survey we determined that the ramp needed to have the following specification:
- Balustrade Handrails – These type of handrails are required at heights over 380mm in order for compliance with Building Regulations (Approved Document M)
- 1100mm high handrails – required on all level walkways (used at the intermediate platform of the ramp)
- The ramp was 7.8m in length with a return platform to give 180-degree direction change
- Main platform was 44.8m x 2m
- Easitread Rubber Crumb surface (our low slip potential, impact absorbing and recommended surface for ramps within industrial setting). Perfect for use at the school given the use by children and with a high footfall
- 1 : 15 gradient as per surveyors’ recommendation
- Continuous handrails – we used our standard connectors which allow continuous handrails meaning we could ensure compliance with building regulations
- Accompanying 2D plan and 3D elevation drawings
- Colour contrasting highlighted edges – these 55mm yellow strips provide a visual contrast for users with visual impairments
- Threshold extension plate to provide a smooth transition from ramp to existing platform
- RAL matched handrails – the school requested we use RAL 3005 (Wine Red) for the handrails as this would marry up with their colour schemes
End Result
The install was completed after 32 hours on site; our installers were able to liaise with the estates manager of the school to ensure we could gain access to site and assure smooth deliveries of any products/equipment. This was alongside organising the removal and disposal of the existing ramp.
The installation was relatively straight forward. Essentially we were removing an existing ramp and providing a like for like replacement. We were able to dismantle this ramp and leave with the estates team who organised a local collection of the waste.
Overall, the ramp we provided allowed safe access to and from the modular units. This modular building contained several classrooms and would be used by upwards of 150 students per day. With this in mind we needed to provide the most suitable, safe and compliant ramp as possible, while also considering the ramps needed to be installed to a strict deadline so that the students could complete their preparations for exam season.
Easiaccess are very happy with the result of this project, the ramp looks brilliant, especially with our Easitread rubber crumb surface and the wine-red handrails (RAL 3005). We hope the school enjoy their new platform/ramp and most importantly good luck to your pupils and their upcoming exams!
