The Project

This case study outlines the design and installation of a bespoke modular ramp system to support a client with dual mobility requirements. The client needed independent rear garden access using a wheeled walker, as well as assisted front access. Due to tight boundary constraints and the presence of shared garden features, a split ramp design was developed to provide safe, practical access while minimising disruption. The solution required careful planning, bespoke components, and a thoughtful layout to meet the client’s needs within a limited space.

Application: Residential
Location: West Yorkshire, Leeds
System:  Modular Ramp and Step Unit

A metal modular wheelchair ramp with black handrails on both sides. The ramp runs alongside a house with a rough-textured wall on the left and a wooden fence on the right. It leads to an open space with houses visible in the background. The ramp has a grated surface for traction and is designed to provide safe access for people with mobility needs.

Requirements

This job involved installing a ramped access system to the customer’s front door, enabling them to enter and exit their home independently while using a wheelchair. This not only allowed them to attend hospital appointments and social events with ease, but also removed the added stress of navigating barriers at their own doorstep.

In addition to front access, the customer required access to the rear of the property, where some mobility aids are stored. Our modular system was designed to provide safe, convenient access to both areas of the home.

As part of the installation, we also incorporated a dedicated bin storage area, since the original bin location was covered by the ramp. This ensured that all practical needs of the household were met without compromising accessibility.

Features

The ramp needed to be suitable and fit for purpose, following on from our site survey we determined that the ramp needed to have the following specification:

  • Includes a large area for bin storage.
  • Multi-directional ramp with metal mesh surface for superior slip resistance.
  • Step and gate unit for ambulant users.
  • Trombone ends to prevent clothes snagging.

End Result

After carefully assessing the challenges and potential hazards of installing a ramp in this space, we developed a tailored solution. We installed a two-way ramp running the length of the side of the house, providing the customer with safe access to both the front door and the garden, while also allowing plenty of space for bin storage.

Additionally, we included an alternative step unit at the front gate to accommodate ambulant users who may prefer a standard step.

The final result was a satisfied customer who could confidently and independently enter and exit their home, free from stress or worry.
