Kings College Hospital

The Project

Kings College Hospital is one of London’s largest and busiest teaching hospitals, with a strong profile of local services primarily serving the boroughs of Lambeth, Southwark, Lewisham and Bromley. Specialist services are available to patients across a wide catchment area, providing nationally and internationally recognised work in liver disease and transplantation, neurosciences, foetal medicine and hematology-oncology.

Application: Healthcare
Location: London
System: Modular Steel Platforms

Client brief

Provide modular steel platforms, ramps and steps to access the two main entrances and two fire exits of the new building.

Challenges identified at site survey

  • Access and parking in and around the site was very restricted, with only one vehicle per subcontractor permitted.
  • Working space on site was very limited especially around the fire door exits for the platforms and steps.

Identified solutions at survey

The solution was to provide more of a protected walkway, rather than a typical ramp installation, with two short 3 metre ramp sections installed at a gradient of 1:14. Bollards installed by Vinci Construction would provide additional protection from the adjacent road. This walkway was in addition to the required platform and step units for the two fire exits.

Project time on site

Three days on site for a team of four installers. Two installers fitting all modular ramp equipment and two installers fitting the fire exit platforms and steps. Heavy coated mesh was also installed to prevent debris collecting underneath the installations.
