Kippax, Leeds

The Project

A client with a steep driveway and limited mobility needed improved access to their garage, where they store a scooter and wheelchair. After evaluating the site, we designed and installed a 6.3m ramp with a mid-point rest section, leading to a platform at the rear of the property. This allows the client to use a walking frame or wheelchair to reach the garage, where they can then transfer to their scooter. Additional modifications included adjusting paving and creating step access from the driveway, ensuring practical and convenient mobility.

Application: Residential
Location: Kippax, Leeds, North Yorkshire
System: Modular Wheelchair Ramp

Requirements

The client has a small scooter stored in the garage and also a wheelchair. The driveway at the front of his property is very steep but he has been managing this with a scooter. On the day of the survey, we discussed various options and the best option was a ramp leading towards the rear of the property and garage. The client will use either a walking frame or wheelchair to get to the garage and then they will transfer to their scooter. A step in the footpath has also been cut away to give better access, past the new ramp installation. We unfortunately cannot do anything with the driveway as the height difference and space available makes this area unfeasible to ramp. Our customer is happy with the solution we have provided.

Features

The ramp needed to be suitable and fit for purpose, following on from our site survey we determined that the ramp needed to have the following specification:

  • Rest section at midpoint of 6.3m ramp
  • Trombone Ends
  • Enlarged platform offsetting steps and allowing access to cupboard
  • Alterations to existing paving to allow ramped access past the ramp
  • New Upvc door with low level threshold

End Result

The end result was a 6.3m ramp, with a rest section at the midway point of the ramp. A 1200mm x 1500mm platform has been installed at the threshold, this moves the ramp out from the wall allowing access into the external cupboard alongside the steps. The 6 steps will allow direct access from the driveway to the side door.
