Leicester Animal Aid Association

The Project

Providing accessible public spaces means creating environments that can be used safely and confidently by everyone. For this project, Easiaccess was appointed to deliver an access solution to a modular charity shop, ensuring visitors could enter and leave the building with ease.

Designed to complement the site’s layout and everyday use, the installation combined accessibility, practicality, and compliance to create a welcoming entrance for all members of the community. The finished solution provides safe access while supporting the important work carried out by the charity.

Application: Public Access
Location: Leicester Animal Aid Association, Elmwood Farm
System: Modular Ramp, Platform and Step Unit

Requirements

The requirement for this project, was the supply and installation of a modular access ramp with accompanying step unit access. This was to be installed to a modular unit on site that was used as a charity shop for the Animal Aid Association, there was possibilities that this ramp would be used by all walks of life including animals.

During the survey it was determined that given the nature of the site and number of employees and customers using the ramp, we would recommend our Easitread surface given the possible use of the ramp by young children and animals. The customer was offered our standard metal mesh surface, given possible budget constraints.

It was imperative that the animal aid association had this ramp installed as soon as possible so they could maintain safe access for all potential visitors to their site and charity shop.

Features

The ramp needed to be suitable and fit for purpose, following on from our site survey we determined that the ramp needed to have the following specification:

  • Standard Handrails – These type of handrails were specified as it was under the necessary height for balustrade (380mm) – these rails are 900mm high, with a midrail and 100mm upstand/kerb
  • The ramp was 4.8m in length with a turning platform to give 90 degree direction change
  • Main platform was 1.5m x 1.8m
  • Expanded Metal Mesh surface – short lead times and well stocked
  • 1 : 15 gradient as per surveyors’ recommendation.
  • Continuous handrails – we used our standard connectors which allow continuous handrails meaning we could ensure compliance with building regulations.
  • Accompanying 2D plan and 3D elevation drawings
  • Colour contrasting highlighted edges – these 55mm yellow strips provide a visual contrast for users with visual impairments.
  • Threshold extension plate to provide a smooth transition from ramp to existing platform

End Result

The install was completed after 8 hours on site; our installers were able to liaise with the general manager and keep the customer up to date on the progress of the works.

The installation was relatively straight forward, we were essentially installing ramp over a hardstanding area with a small, stepped access for ambulant users.

Overall, the ramp we provided was able to allow safe access to and from the charity shop to the car park area and could be used straight away providing compliance with building regulations for the Animal Aid Association on their charity shop premises.

Easiaccess are very happy with the result of this project, the ramp looks brilliant and we hope the charity shop and animal aid association get great use from it, and can now welcome more visitors to their premises.
