Millhouse Green, Barnsley

The Project

For this project, we had to take a number of factors into consideration to ensure the client received the best possible access solution for their needs. The client required assisted wheelchair access for a family member, so the ramp needed to be designed with carers in mind, while remaining easy to use and practical for the whole household.

We also received several requests from the client, including working around their existing garden planters, maintaining access to the cupboards, and keeping space available for bin storage. Once our surveyor visited the property to take detailed measurements and assess the layout, they designed a modular ramp solution that would fit perfectly within the space while improving access to the home.

Application: Residential
Location: Millhouse Green
System:  Modular Ramp and Step Unit

Requirements

The client came to Easiaccess requiring a modular ramp for a disabled family member at the residence. The person requiring the ramp was dependent on carers facilitating the use of their wheelchair, so the ramp was to be tailored for assisted use. It was also requested that the ramp was to work around the existing planters,
keep access to the meter cupboards and offer suitable convenient bin storage options. Finally, the client wanted assurances of a dual access onto the ramp via a step unit so there was a more direct access to the property’s main door. This would be beneficial for other members within the household to access as well as visitors and pedestrians fulfilling deliveries.

Features

The ramp needed to be suitable and fit for purpose, following on from our site survey we determined that the ramp needed to have the following specification:

  • 4300mm of Metal Modular Ramping
  • 1 x 2200x1200mm Platform
  • 1 x 1200x1200mm Platform Turn Kit
  • 2 x 1200x900mm 45 Degree Platform Extension Kits
  • 300mm Trombone Ends
  • 1 Tread Gate and Step Unit Kit
  • Aluminium Threshold Extension Plates

End Result

The end result was a success with our new modular ramp system integrating seamlessly with the space at the clients property. The client already had a level threshold door that ran flush with the brick and flagged platform, but due to the door opening externally this platform would have to be extended. This would provide a rest section for the client to open the door whilst simultaneously being on a level surface. The best configuration for the ramp was a return ramp as this would keep it as close to the house wall as possible. At the clients request, this style of ramp leaves a large portion of garden at the front which could be used as a storage unit, as well as the potential for a seating area in the summer months.

This course for the ramp allowed us to fit the required 7000mm of modular ramping over the 580mm height difference from threshold to landing achieving a 1:12 gradient complying within building regulations. Easirail was also incorporated around the existing steps to further safeguard the stepped access and tie in with modular ramps handrails. The rails descending the steps were left detached from the ramp purposefully under the provision that these rails could be used as an aid for the stepped access should the ramp ever be removed from the property. Finally, a 1200x600mm paved landing area was used to link the ramp to the driveway, leaving the driveway completely clear allowing cars to still park with no interference.
