The Project

Our goal was to create a practical, long-term solution that would provide safe, independent access while working seamlessly with the existing layout of the property.

Working closely with the customer and local council, we carefully assessed the space, considered multiple design approaches, and developed a solution that would balance compliance with usability, and aesthetics. The project required thoughtful planning to ensure the finished installation not only met specific requirements, but also enhanced the overall functionality of the home.

Application: Residential
Location: Morpeth, Newcastle
System:  Modular Ramp and Step Unit

A Metal Modular Ramp with an attached step unit to the left. The ramp ascends from the right up to the door. This ramp is against a brick residential home with a white door.

Requirements

For this installation, we carefully followed the local council’s specified requirements, ensuring full compliance while designing a solution that met the customer’s access needs. They asked for a ramp to be fitted at the customers front door and run along side of the house wall. With this ramp needing wheelchair access, they also requested a paved path that would return back to the customers driveway.

This worked better because the other option would have been to make a return in the ramp, and lead it back towards the pavement. This would have taken up most of the garden space and wouldn’t have been necessary.

The garden was already filled with gravel which meant there was a small bit of groundworks required to make way for the paving slabs to go. This meant we would be able to fully accommodate to this customer and give them wheelchair access from their driveway, all the way to their front door.

Features

The ramp needed to be suitable and fit for purpose, following on from our site survey we determined that the ramp needed to have the following specification:

  • A 1:12 ramp that gets them from the door to the new landing area.
  • A step unit at the side to allow them to get in to the property without having to go all the way around the ramp.
  • A new paved landing area with pin curbs that will allow them to get back to the driveway safely as the area was previously gravelled.
  • There is also an internal excellent systems ramp to get over the internal door threshold.
  • The paved area will also continue to work as a feature for the property in the future if the ramp is ever removed.

End Result

The installation has significantly improved access to the property, enabling the customer to enter and exit their home safely and independently. By installing a modular metal ramp and step unit, we created a secure and reliable solution tailored to their needs.

New paving was also laid to replace the existing gravel, providing a smooth, stable surface for wheelchair navigation. This now allows the customer to travel safely from their driveway to the ramp without the need for improvised or potentially unsafe methods, removing worry and restoring confidence.

In addition, a step unit was installed at the front door to provide convenient access for ambulant users. This offers a shorter, more direct route into the property while maintaining privacy, as the ramp extends past the windows.

The result is a compliant, practical, and user-friendly access solution and most importantly, a very satisfied customer.
