The Project
Application: Residential
Location: Muswell Hill, Newcastle
System: Modular Ramp, Step Unit and Platforms

Requirements
The customer had existing steps at the front door of their property, however, these were too steep to be used safely due to mobility challenges. To resolve this, we recommended that we should install a ramp to provide safer and more accessible entry and exit to the home.
One of the challenges we faced was the steep slope of the front garden, with the highest point being located at the front door. This meant we needed to overcome a significant height difference while still maintaining a compliant gradient.
Our surveyor quickly identified that a straight ramp from the front door would not be suitable, as the gradient would be too steep and unsafe for anyone using it. Instead, a ramp with two turns was designed, allowing us to achieve a compliant gradient while safely overcoming the required height.
Another challenge we faced was the existing door threshold, which was too high and created an obstacle when accessing the ramp. To resolve this, the door needed to be replaced with a low-threshold option, allowing the customer to step directly onto the ramp without needing to step up and over the threshold.
Features
The ramp needed to be suitable and fit for purpose, following on from our site survey we determined that the ramp needed to have the following specification:
- Includes a section of paving to allow the customer get from the ramp, out of their garden.
- Gravel is placed underneath to stop weeds and plants growing through the ramp.
- Three tread step unit for ambulant users.
- A gate unit at the top of the steps for safety.
- Trombone ends used when exiting the ramp system to prevent clothes snagging.
- 2 turn platforms to allow the ramp to come back on itself – saving room
- Used extended legs to accompany the fall of the garden.
- A change of door to allow for a low-threshold.
- Gradient: (1:12).
End Result
Taking the steep slope into account, our surveyor designed a bespoke ramp solution that fit perfectly into the space available while significantly improving accessibility for the customer. The end result included a modular ramp system with a three tread step unit, a gate unit, and a two turn platform, allowing us to overcome the height difference while minimising the overall footprint.
By incorporating a step unit alongside the ramp, the design also caters for ambulant users. This allows them to access the door directly via the steps, without needing to travel the full length of the ramp, providing a quicker and more convenient route into the property.
This solution enables the customer to enter and exit their home safely and with ease, while also boosting their confidence through its simple and user-friendly design.
