New Silksworth, Sunderland

The Project

The client requested the addition of a ramp to provide access to a public footpath while preserving the existing stepped entry. The project was particularly challenging due to a significant height difference between the door threshold and the footpath, requiring extensive excavation and careful design to integrate the ramp seamlessly into the property. The successful outcome included a multi-tiered garden layout, convenient access points, and a new boundary gate, ensuring both functionality and aesthetic appeal.

Application: Residential
Location: Sunderland, Tyne and Wear
System: Ramp and Groundworks

Requirements

The request of the client was to create ramped access to the public footpath without compromising the existing stepped access to the property. This was without doubt one of the most challenging surveys and installs our fitters have come across with there being a vast 1490mm height difference from the door threshold to the public footpath. With excavation required and angles and curves to contend with.

With the ramp having to be of such large scale we had to think about what the property would look like should the ramp ever be removed as well as still creating convenient access points to the rear of the property and direct stepped access as this was the only door at the property.

Features

The ramp needed to be suitable and fit for purpose, following on from our site survey we determined that the ramp needed to have the following specification:

  • 15600mm of metal modular ramping
  • 1200x1200mm hatch section
  • 2 x Single Tread Step Units 900x300mm
  • Platform Extension 15 Degree Platform 1200x300mm
  • 4 x 1200x1200mm Platform Turn Kits
  • 2200X1200mm Platform Return Kit
  • 1080mm Universal Boundary Gate
  • Groundworks inc. (Excavation, Paving On Edge, Paving, Cut New Opening and Render)

End Result

The result was a great success, and all bases were covered. We excavated parts of the garden that were required to allow for the ramp descent, layering the garden in 3 tiers retaining all levels with paving on edge, a whopping four skips were required to clear the garden! Gate and step units were incorporated for access to the rear and the existing stepped access at the front. Within the new landing area of the ramp a new opening was created in the wall and a new boundary gate was fitted. We made the landing area big enough to allow for a bin storage area whilst maintaining a turning circle suitable for a wheelchair when exiting the property. The ramp fit perfectly within the boundaries, utilising a platform extension 15 degree kit to match the curve of the wall at the boundary bringing the ramp into the landing area. A hatch section 1200x1200mm was also included for an inspection cover at the top section of the garden.
