The Project
Application: Public Access (Non domestic)
Location: Thames Water Utilities, Barking
System: Ramp, Platform and Step Unit
Requirements
The requirement for this project, was the supply and installation of a two metal modular access ramps and a platform/step system, this was needed to provide safe access into a new welfare unit that had been installed at the Beckton Sewage Treatment Works. This was a new modular building that was being installed to provide office space, welfare facilities and a WC for all employees at the treatment plant.
During the survey it was ascertained that given the nature of the site and employees using the ramp, it would be better suited to using an alternative surface to the modular ramp and step system. There was also a possibility the ramps would be used to transfer plant and office equipment into the new building.
Our Easitread Rubber Crumb surface was the perfect solution for this project, a low slip potential, self-draining surface with excellent impact absorption properties. It would be ideal for a high footfall environment within an “industrial” setting.
Features
The ramp needed to be suitable and fit for purpose, following on from our site survey we determined that the ramp needed to have the following specification:
- Balustrade Handrails – These type of handrails are required at heights over 380mm in order for compliance with Building Regulations (Approved Document M)
- 1100mm high handrails, required on all level walkways.
- The ramps at either end of the unit were 7.8m in total and was accompanied by a main platform of 2m x 3m – an intermediate landing was required on both ramps of 3.3m x 1.5m
- Easitread Rubber Crumb surface (our low slip potential, impact absorbing and recommended surface for ramps within industrial setting). Perfect for use at the facility, given employees players would be wearing PPE and using the ramps to transport equipment).
- 1 : 14 gradient as per surveyors’ recommendation.
- Continuous handrails – we used our standard connectors which allow continuous handrails meaning we could ensure compliance with building regulations
- Accompanying 2D plan and 3D elevation drawings
- Colour contrasting highlighted edges – these 55mm yellow strips provide a visual contrast for users with visual impairments.
End Result
The install was completed after 20 hours on site, our installers were able to liaise with the office staff on the ongoings, as the site was limited due to the nature of the works carried out on site. All deliveries needed to be booked well in advance and using the FORS (Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme)
The installation was relatively straight forward, the only real challenge was having to negotiate around a busy and live site with employees of the treatment works constantly using the site.
Overall, the two access ramps perfectly accompany the building and provide a safe means of access and egress to the welfare facility, while maintaining a sleek and aesthetically pleasing finish. We are very pleased with the finished project and will be delighted to continue working with this long standing customer. The team are delighted with how the install played out and the finished pictures look great.
