ToolStation Store, Portsmouth

The Project

The project involved the supply and installation of a metal modular access ramp at the new Toolstation branch in Portsmouth. With tight timescales and a compact site, the installation was completed in one day despite being one of the last contractors on site. The ramp, featuring a 1:12 gradient, standard handrails, highlighted edges for visibility, and stepped access for ambulant users, was designed to meet the client’s needs. The handrails were RAL matched to Sapphire Blue to align with the customer’s branding. The project was completed on time, with the customer highly satisfied with the result and the quick turnaround.

Requirements

The requirement for this project, was the supply and installation of a metal modular access ramp to a commercial unit, within an industrial complex. This was being redeveloped into a Toolstation store for access by the public and local contractors. This would be the main access point into the branch.

As always with construction projects, ramped access is often an afterthought, therefore, we are always working to very tight timescales. With this project we were one of the last contractors on the site as the building was due to open the same week as we were installing the ramp. With this in mind, we expected the site to be quite compact and we were on site with several other contractors at the same time all the while the main access door was being used by other contractors.

Features

The ramp needed to be suitable and fit for purpose, following on from our site survey we determined that the ramp needed to have the following specification:

  • Standard Handrails – normal handrails could be used as the ramp was under regulation height of 380mm for balustrade handrails.
  • The ramp was 1.8m in total and was accompanied by a main platform of 5400x1200mm
  • 1 : 12 gradient as per surveyors’ recommendation.
  • Continuous handrails – we used our standard connectors which allow continuous handrails meaning we could ensure compliance.
  • Highlighted edges – we also included 55mm yellow highlighted edges to all step nosing’s and any levels changes to the ramps – we offer this on all non-domestic ramps to aid any potential users who may have visual impairments.
  • Stepped access – for ambulant users who did not wish to walk around and up the ramp.
  • Access hatch for access to inspection chambers and utility access points
  • Handrails were RAL matched to 5003 (Sapphire Blue) in keeping with the customers brand requirements.
  • Accompanying 2D plan and 3D elevation drawings

End Result

The complete installation of the ramp was accomplished in 2 days, with the install team travelling 8 hours to reach site and finishing the following day. The customer was delighted with the ramp install and the turnaround time 4 weeks from survey to installation, we are very pleased with how this project unfolded and the blue handrails look great!
