Top Tips to keep your ramp safe this winter!

As the winter approaches and the cold weather settles in, it’s important to know how to maintain and care for your ramp to ensure that they are safe. As ramp experts, our team at Easiaccess are here to provide you with some top tips on how to clear things such as snow and ice off your ramp to ensure you and you’re Christmas visitors are safe when using your ramp.

Top Tip No. 1 – Snow Removal

If snow starts to rest on the surface of the ramp, it is important to remove this before it freezes over. To remove the snow, start by brushing the snow up towards the top of the ramp. Our ramps are designed with a meshed surface to allow debris, water, and other materials to pass through. So if you sweep the snow up the ramp, it will be pushed through the meshed surface making it easier to clear the snow.

Top Tip No. 2 – Keep the ramp clean

Keeping your ramp clean during the winter is essential! If things such as leaves and dirt get onto the ramp and the cold weather freezes them, they can be hard to remove and present a dangerous trip hazard. So the best thing to do is to try keep the dirt off of the ramp by brushing off debris. Additionally, if dirt starts to freeze on our meshed surface, it can block the holes and therefore nothing will be able to pass through. As a result of this, water and other debris will remain on the ramp surface, which could lead it to icing in the cold weather.

Top Tip No. 3 – Regular Inspections

Regularly inspecting your ramp is a good idea through the winter months. Look over the ramp for things such as: loose screws, damaged surface, disconnected handrails and any wear and tear the ramp may take overtime. Addressing these issues early before the really cold weather hits is a must, because overtime, weather could lead to these issues evolving worsening. If you think your ramp is damaged, don’t hesitate to get in contact with us so we can get someone out to come and look at it!

Top Tip No. 4 – Using Salt

Salt can be applied to the ramps in snowy or icy conditions, as this will help with the removal of it. If you check the forecast and see icy or snowy conditions over the coming days, sprinkle salt over the ramp so that it doesn’t give it time to settle and cause any issues. This method can still be applied to metal meshed surfaced ramp but is better suited to the GRP, Easitread and tactile surfaces as they are more likely to hold snow and ice.

Conclusion

Ensuring your ramp remains safe and accessible through the winter months is crucial. By following these tips you can reduce the risks that are posed by the cold weather. Remember to regularly check your ramp for any signs of wear and tear to prevent any problems later on.
